Students chose the stain color for their box folios and then considered what medium (paint, collage, drawing) would best express their ideas. Today we continued in studio mode with Scholars choosing their work independently, moving from Project A, B and C. Most murals are almost ready for the painting stage and 3 more boxes will be constructed.
Today Tren'et and Diamond led the group discussion of Ch.3 with a series of quotes and questions. They ended with rousing renditions of Jingle Bells and Mary Had a Little Lamb. Great job ladies!
Next we got to work on all three projects with students moving between constructing boxes, making pages for their boxes, selecting images for their murals, tracing images onto watercolor paper, and working with acrylic transfer. Everyone worked hard today. Today was a busy day at DAAP. First students visited a DAAP gallery exhibit: 30 American: the Region. The chose one work of art to examine for 15 minutes and discussed their observations. Next we went to DAAP to work on 3 projects. Students began to build their box folios with Mr. Kris, finalize their mural images with Ms. Nandita and Mr. Ben, and learned Acrylic transfer with Mr. Brian.
Uday Sheth, Research and Development Director at Procter and Gamble talked with the scholars about brands and developing a personal brand on Monday night.
Today Kris presented Picasso's mural Guernica to begin Project 3, our collaborative mural project. A discussion of Guernica led to thinking about how visual images both describe and create affect. Next, Nandita and Kris led a Design Thinking Activity to generate ideas around 4 themes (for the murals): Technology, Remix, Visual Culture and Significant Cincinnatians. Students were asked to 'think about how they think' as it was articulated visually through collaborative design thinking. We also discussed how concepts/ideas/images are both convergent and divergent. Ideas exist in networks with no beginning and no potential end.
